The Congratulations of Silence

Turn from the traffic that jams the Jerusalem road.
Those cheers are air, those palms so easily swayed.
Before the blustering cock’s third strut is crowed,
To your betrayers that same ragtime will be played.
Act for the praise that roars from the empty stands.
In the long lawsuits of the soul, this only has cleared her
Of vanity. What is the applause of the filled theater
But a noise made by the shallows of the hands?
And modesty, O garish and stage-struck spouse
Of Christ, will bring down at last the devil’s house.
